The Wiregrass Area United Way Food Bank was started by the
Wiregrass United Way in July, 1990, and is now in its thirteenth
year of operation. The food bank primarily serves five counties
in Southeast Alabama: Dale, Coffee, Geneva, Henry and Houston
at its 18,000 square foot warehouse.
Over the past decade, the Wiregrass
Food Bank has:
- distributed over 34 million pounds of food
- helped to provide over 26 million meals
- savings for participating agencies per month averages over
$300,000, agencies have saved over $46 million during the
past 16 years
- salvaged over 34 million pounds of food
that would have been dumped
or destroyed
- grown from 16 member agencies to over 250 (and still growing)
Another program operated through the Food Bank is the Brown
Bag Program, which provides supplemental groceries every third
Wednesday of the month to qualified and sponsored seniors in
the Wiregrass. The program began with 27 recipiants and has
since grown to over 1000 in the five-county service area. To
