History
Food Bank of North Alabama
(FBNA) became affiliated with America's Second Harvest in
1985 and began full-time operations in April of that year.
In 1994, FBNA became a certified affiliate of America's Second
Harvest. Our food bank is responsible for providing direct
food bank support to more than 160 charitable feeding programs
in seven counties in North Alabama. The charitable programs
include shelters for the homeless, soup kitchens, special
residential facilities for children and the handicapped,
low-income day care providers, emergency food pantries and
shelters for abused women and children. The counties we serve
are: Cullman, DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, Marshall
and Morgan.
During fiscal year 2003,
FBNA distributed more than 4.5 million pounds of food
in support of North Alabama's needy, ill, children.
Using a nationally formulated value for a pound of contributed
food ($1.28), FBNA provided more than $6 million worth of
support to its affiliated charities last year. The Food Bank
expended $340,000 to cover its operating costs in '03, giving
it a $17 to $1 benefit to cost ratio.
